ARTIST CALL OUT & BRIEF : SUFFRAGETTE PRINCESS SOPHIA DULEEP SINGH MURAL
Arts La'Olam has been delivering intercultural socially-engaged arts activities responding to local issues and community needs with artists and diverse communities in East Anglia since 2002.
We are seeking a professional artist to work with groups of South Asian Women in Ipswich to design a public mural in homage to Princess Sophia Duleep Singh (8 August 1876 – 22 August 1948), a prominent suffragette who lived in Thetford, East Anglia.

This artists opportunity is open to all but submissions from women artists of south Asian heritage are especially welcome.
This project celebrates East Anglia's connection to the Women’s Centenary. The project will increase awareness of women's suffrage, promote women’s participation and women’s relevance in British history as well as promote the strength of women's voices communities and encourage them to participate in civic life and politics.
Five creative 2hr workshops will take place between 17th November and 30th December 2018 in a familiar venue and a regular meeting place for women's community groups (and English language classes), as well as on the site of Ipswich Waterfront where the finished mural will be painted.
The beneficiaries of this project include women from South Asian communities in Ipswich and Suffolk. People learning English for the first time will be included, as well as first, second and third generation British South Asian women.
The groups will benefit from art workshops where they will be encouraged to explore and enjoy their creativity and learn new skills, learn about Princess Sophia Duleep Singh contribution to women's suffrage and talk about women's voices in communities and civic life.
The finished mural design should be hand-painted, beautiful, of an excellent standard and at least 3mx6m, it will be in a prominent location near Ipswich Waterfront and will last for an anticipated 8 years.
BUDGET
Artists Fees incl. travel expenses @£200 per session x 5 sessions ; £1,000.00
Artists Materials @£50 per session x 5 sessions ; £250.00
